Acne is a common skin problem that affects people of all ages. Teenagers suffer the most from acne because of the increased hormone levels in their body.
Sleep deprivation, too much stress, unhealthy eating habits and a hectic lifestyles can also cause acne. Acne can appear on the face, chest, back and scalp. Although there is no definitive cure, there are many simple and easy natural cures using common ingredients found in your pantry and refrigerator to prevent or minimize the pimples and acnes.
1. Apple cider vinegar
For a DIY toner, dilute one part apple cider vinegar with three to four parts water (use four if you have sensitive skin), and then apply all over your face using a cotton ball or pad. "It may kill surface bacteria and give a mild chemical peel," Dr. Krant says. What's more, adds Dr. Jaliman, apple cider vinegar contains citric acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid—added to many over-the-counter acne products.

2. Spot Treat With Tea Tree Oil
Fear you’re getting a pimple? Dab the offending spot with a little tea tree oil (available at many drugstores),The tea tree oil is a great all-natural remedy with proven results similar to over-the-counter acne creams.
How to Use It
- Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 9 parts water. Dip a cotton swab into the mixture and apply it to affected areas.
- Apply moisturizer if desired. Repeat this process 1–2 times per day, as needed.
3. Cucumber
Ever put cucumber slices over your eyes to reduce puffiness? They may also help reduce the swelling associated with acne, says Dr. Krant. Cucumbers are cooling to the skin, hydrating, and full of vitamin C. "Take a cold cucumber slice and apply to the skin to hydrate and alleviate discomfort from acne," says Dr. Jaliman.

4. Baking Soda
Baking soda is a great option for clearing up blemishes, it’s cheap, it’s natural, and it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals or other ingredients. The benefits of baking soda are many: it exfoliates, it reduces inflammation, and it clears up skin. All you have to do is use warm water and baking soda to make a paste. Then, apply the paste to your skin like a mask. Leave it on for up to an hour, and then rinse. You will be amazed at the results.
How to Use It
- Mix the baking soda with some water to get a smooth paste. Wash your face with a cleanser and pat dry.Apply the paste onto all of the affected areas as you would a spot treatment.
- Let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse off with cool or lukewarm water. Finish by applying moisturizer.
5. Raw white potato
Potatoes have been applied to bruises and wounds for a century; the tubers are anti-inflammatory and may also be antiseptic, says Dr. Krant. Plus, Dr. Jaliman adds, potatoes contain niacin, which may help lighten acne marks. She suggests applying shredded white potato to the skin like a mask and massaging for 2 minutes.
How to Use It
- Grate the raw potato pulp as finely as possible and apply it over your face as a mask, leave it on for close to 15-20 minutes and wash it off with solution of water and vinegar.
- Blend one raw potato (with the skin), with a cucumber (with the skin), along with 1 egg yolk and a cup of yogurt, make it into a fine paste and apply it as a face mask. Keep it on for 15-20 minutes before washing it off with warm water.
6. Make a Honey and Cinnamon Mask
How to Use It
- Mix the two ingredients into a paste and apply it using your fingers or a brush on your clean face. Make sure to remove any makeup, moisturizer or sunscreen off your face before applying the mask and as with all face masks, avoid the eye area.
- Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water, then splash some cold water at the end to close up those pores. For best results, apply the mask once or twice a week.
7. Egg Whites + Lemon
Egg whites also make a great home remedy for getting rid of pimples. To use this method, simply separate the egg white from the yolk. Then, you can use a cotton swab, cotton ball, or simply your fingers to apply the egg white to your skin. Your skin will glow and begin to tighten. Leave the egg white mixture on your skin for up to an hour for best results.

- Relax yourself as you wait for the mixture to settle and dry on your face. You can lie down and breathe deeply, thinking happy thoughts! Keep the mask on for 10-15 minutes. When the mixture has completely dried on your face, gently scrub it off using warm water, tackling all areas of your face in a circular motion. Pat dry with a towel and marvel at the smooth feel of your skin!
