10 Home Remedies For Toothache That Really Work

Cavities, loose fillings, a cracked tooth, an abscess (a pocket of infection at the gum line), or a sinus condition can all bring on the dreaded toothache pain.Your head pounds, your gums throb, and your mouth is sore and tender. You’ve got a toothache.Until you can see the dentist,  You can also try some natural remedies that can provide toothache relief.

1. SALT AND WARM WATER
A teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of boiling water makes a pain-killing mouthwash (bonus: this can relieve a sore throat as well), which will clean away irritating debris and help reduce swelling. Swish it around for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Salt water cleanses the area around the tooth and draws out some of the fluid that causes swelling. Repeat this treatment as often as needed.

2. ICE
Put some ice in your hand, on the same side of the body as your sore tooth. Rub the ice in the space between your thumb and forefinger for 7 minutes, or until the area turns numb. Why does it work? Researchers believe ice stops pain signals to your brain.

3. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
To help kill bacteria and relieve some discomfort, swish with a mouthful of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. This can provide temporary relief if the toothache is accompanied by fever and a foul taste in the mouth (both are signs of infection), but like other toothache remedies, it’s only a stopgap measure until you see your dentist and get the source of infection cleared up. A hydrogen peroxide solution is only for rinsing. Spit it out, then rinse several times with plain water.

4. ONION
Onions offer antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that are known to kill the bacteria in the mouth that contributes to pain. Placing a piece of raw onion over the painful area is something that’s even been recommended by some dentists. Sufferers have gone as far as saying that it’s as effective as eight capsules of Advil and a bottle of Orajel. While that’s saying a lot, sucking on an onion probably doesn’t sound all that pleasant, but if it works, it’s definitely worth it, right?

Just cut a piece of onion into a size that comfortably fits into your mouth and apply it to the affected area. It’s important that the slice is freshly cut so that some onion juice is released. Allow it to sit for five minutes, or even longer if you can.

5. APPLY PRESSURE
Try an acupressure technique to stop tooth pain fast. With your thumb, press the point on the back of your other hand where the base of your thumb and your index finger meet. Apply pressure for about two minutes. This helps trigger the release of endorphins, the brain's feel-good hormones. (Off-limits...if you're pregnant.)

6. TURMERIC
Turmeric is a true wonder spice – it seems there is almost nothing that this amazing herb can’t do. In addition to all of its many health benefits, it’s long been used as a natural treatment for toothaches. It possesses strong antiseptic, analgesic and antibacterial properties that can help stop pain in its tracks. It’s considered to be effective against tooth and gum infections as well as excruciating abscesses.

To use turmeric, add a teaspoon of turmeric powder into a small amount of water – just enough to make a paste. Dip a cotton ball into the paste and then place it into your mouth on the affected area. It can also be applied directly, or mixed with raw, organic honey, which offers its own powerful antibacterial properties, for added benefits and taste.

7. GUAVE LEAVES
Fresh guava leaves can also alleviate toothache, thanks to their anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial properties.

Simply chew one or two tender guava leaves until the juice starts working on the affected tooth. You can also use raw spinach leaves in the same way.
Another remedy is to put four to five guava leaves in water and boil it. Allow the solution to cool to a warm temperature and add some salt. Use the solution as a mouthwash.LEAVES

8. CLOVE OIL
This is one of the most effectual ways to use cloves against toothache. All you need is: cloves oil, ear buds and half a tablespoon of olive oil.

This is what you need to do: use warm salted water for rinsing your mouth, which will prepare the palate easier to absorb the oil. Mix half a tablespoon of olive oil with a few drops of cloves oil. Apply the medication to the area where you feel pain using ear bud. Apply it with several easy touches.

9. CUCUMBER
Cucumber is known for its hemostatic and soothing effects, which is why you’ve probably heard about it as an excellent remedy for under-eye dark circles. When used for a toothache remedy, its hemostatic effects help lessen blood flow to the affected tooth, ultimately lessening and soothing pain.

Bring a cucumber to room temperature if it’s been refrigerated first if you’re sensitive to cold as it could worsen pain. Then slice a fresh piece and hold it over the affected area. Alternatively, you can mash up a piece of cucumber with a bit of sea salt and then pack it around the aching tooth.

  • Mix equal amounts of pepper and common salt with a few drops of water to form a paste.
  • Apply the paste directly on the affected tooth and allow it to sit for a few minutes.
