The most annoying and uncomfortable feeling is a sinus infection. But, it is very common, it affects around 37 million Americans a year. What is a sinus infection? Well a sinus infection is an inflammation of the lining in the sinus cavities. Sinusitis can be caused by bacteria, allergies, colds or flu. Luckily, you don’t have to over dose yourself with the conventional drugs, because there are many effective and natural remedies that deal with a sinus infection.
WHAT CAUSES NASAL CONGESTION?
A stuffy nose often occurs as a symptom of another health problem such as a sinus infection or the common cold. Usually, these health problems are minor i.e. allergies, nasal polyps, (noncancerous growths on the nasal passages or sinuses due to inflammation,) chemical exposures, environmental irritants and hay fever.
When the lining in the sinus cavities gets inflamed due to irritants, bacteria or viruses, your nasal passage swells and gets blocked up, making it hard for you to breathe.
Nasal Congestion usually clears up within a week, but with this remedy, you may not wait that long to breathe easy ever again!

According to the assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine Lisa DeStefano D.O., this causes the vomer bone, which goes through the nasal passages to the mouth, to move back and forth, the motion loosens congestion and after 20 seconds, you’ll feel that your sinuses have started to drain.
FOUR ADDITIONAL DIY REMEDIES FOR NASAL CONGESTION
If the technique mentioned above doesn’t work for you, don’t rush to your drug store for a solution just yet! Try these four remedies. You may already have these ingredients at home.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar is a hailed sinus infection treatment. Being just one of many apple cider vinegar uses, countless individuals attest to the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar against a multitude of health conditions, including sinus infection. One of the most powerful ways to use ACV is to mix 8oz of warm water with 2 tbsp of ACV and 1 tbsp of honey. The sinus infection could vanish within just a few days. Another option when taking apple cider vinegar is to simply take 1 tablespoon 3 times daily, whether diluted to ingest throughout the day or made to ingest quickly. Lastly, you can also try steaming with apple cider vinegar; mix ~1/2 cup of ACV with 1/2 of water, heat it on the stove, and inhale the steam with mouth and eyes closed. I recommend using organic ACV over non-organic.
2. Hot Steam
Whether you stand in a hot shower, place your head over a bowl of steaming water or use a humidifier, hot steam has classically been used to clean and clear sinuses. The warm steam loosens mucus while dilating nasal passages for effective drainage. This is an easy, safe and comfortable method of cleaning your sinuses at home.
3. Oregano oil
This essential oil has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Plus, being an anti-inflammatory, it helps reduce inflammation. It also works as a great antioxidant and immune booster. Put a couple of drops of the oil of oregano in one-half cup of boiling water and inhale the steam to clear the congestion and open up the sinuses. Do this daily until the infection is gone.
Alternatively, mix two or three drops of oregano oil in a glass of water. Drink this solution twice daily until the infection clears. Another option is to simply put a drop or two of the oil under your tongue daily for about a week, or until you get positive results.
4. Turmeric
Thanks to a powerful compound found in turmeric known as curcumin, turmeric possesses powerful health benefits. Among the health benefits of turmeric is the spice’s ability to treat a sinus infection. Curcumin helps to heal the sinus cavity and clear the airways.
Since sinus infections are caused by nasal inflammation, and turmeric possesses anti-inflammatory properties, the spice can be seen as one of the existing natural cures for sinus infection.
